Residency in Primary Eye Care
This residency program provides advanced clinical training in primary optometric care in a multidisciplinary environment. Extensive interaction with attending physicians, students, fellow residents and ophthalmology facilitates a truly unique learning experience, as well as a superlative opportunity to interact with other members of the health care delivery team. Direct optometric patient care is combined with clinical supervision of third and fourth professional year students to complete the resident's optometric clinical education. The residents also participate in journal clubs, grand rounds lectures, classroom teaching, and informal conferences with students, faculty, and residents in other subspecialty areas. Completion of a literature review and an original scholarly paper are also required prior to completion of the residency.
Each primary care position offers exposure to a specialized sub-discipline within optometry. While all of the residencies are primary care based, they provide a special emphasis in either ocular disease, cornea and contact lenses, pediatrics and binocular vision, or geriatrics and low vision. The resident spends approximately 60% of the time in primary care, with the remainder spent in various aspects of one of the optometric subspecialties. Qualified applicants will be interviewed by both the primary care residency selection committee as well as members of the specialty service being considered. The application form should reflect the program desired.
The primary care residency program is 12.5 months in length, beginning the first week in July and ending at the end of the second week of July the following year. The salary is $30,000 with an additional professional development stipend of $700.00 to attend conferences and seminars. Professional liability insurance is provided by NSU as well as health benefits equivalent to the NSU College of Optometry Faculty. The work week is 5.5 days in length and may include Saturday's or Wednesday evening hours. The resident's also participate in after-hours urgent care along with an assigned Residency Supervisor.

Residency in Pediatric Optometry
This residency program provides advanced training in the primary optometric care of pediatric patients, as well as in the specialty areas of infant vision, binocular vision, strabismus, amblyopia, visual perception, vision therapy and pediatric eye disease. The resident participates in direct patient care as well as in clinical supervision of fourth year optometry students.
This program offers the resident the opportunity to provide full scope optometric care in a multidisciplinary setting. Residents work with physicians, educators, psychologists, and other professionals in a diverse assortment of clinical and educational settings. This is achieved through rotations through various clinics and service providers.
The residency stresses the health care team approach to patient care management. Didactic experience will include seminars, case conferences, laboratory teaching, research, and the completion of a scholarly paper or case presentation for publication. The intent is that the resident will be prepared to apply the knowledge and skills gained from this residency to the varied types of practice now within the health care system.
