Josephine Shallo-Hoffmann PhD, FAAO holds an academic appointment, at the rank of Professor, in the College of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Professor Shallo-Hoffmann studied psychology at Columbia University in New York, and Rutgers University in New Jersey and was awarded a PhD in 1984 from the Institute of Cognitive Studies at Rutgers University in the area of visual perception under the guidance of Professor Irvin Rock. After graduation Dr Shallo-Hoffmann pursued clinical research investigations in the areas of normal and abnormal eye-movements, associated adaptive processes and neuro-optometry. She held appointments at the University of Goettingen in Germany and the Medical Research Council of Great Britain at the National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square in London before her present appointment. Since joining the faculty at the College of Optometry in 1999, Dr Shallo-Hoffmann, in collaboration with colleagues, has published 16 index medicus listed articles and letters and received five research grants. Two were awarded from the Health Professions Division of Nova Southeastern University, and three NSU President's Faculty Scholarship Awards. She has had the privilege to be elected "Professor of the Year" in 1999, 2000 and 2007, and the “NSU Professor of the Year”, Student Life Achievement Award in 2001. She serves as Chair of the NSU Institutional Review Board (2006 – 2008). Current responsibilities include serving as the Chair of Research and Graduate Studies; in this capacity she has developed the Master of Science in Clinical Vision Research Program. The first class, consisting of five students, graduated in the Spring of 2005. In addition to her administrative and teaching responsibilities, Dr Shallo-Hoffmann is responsible for mentoring faculty in their research and scholarship interests.
