104-Hour Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents Certification Course


Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry (NSUCO) is pleased to announce its forthcoming 100-Hour TPA Certification Course to be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada beginning on April 4, 2008. The Academy of Ophthalmic Education (AOE) will serve as the host and administrator for the program. This course was developed by Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, a college located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE). Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry certifies that this course meets the criteria and requirements of the College of Optometrists of Ontario, leading to TPA certification.

Sixty-one hours of classroom instruction will be presented during three three-day weekends in April, May, and June of 2008. The individual courses presented qualify for Category A continuing education credits through the Ontario College of Optometrists and can be applied towards your current three year CE cycle (60 hours). The entire classroom program will also be approved for continuing education credit by the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE) for U.S. optometrists who would like to attend all or part of the program.

NSUCO faculty members will present this course along with ophthalmology faculty from the University of Toronto. Adjunct faculty members have been selected to assist in the lecture portion of the course as well as the 20-hour clinical skills workshop and 20-hour clinical rotation. The clinical rotation sites and adjunct faculty will be certified by NSUCO.

The passage of final regulations by the Ministry of Health is expected by September 2008. The 100-hour course being presented by NSUCO will conclude prior tothe end of the year.

Part 1

Friday to Sunday April 4, 5, 6, 2008 – 20 Hours

Friday to Sunday May 2, 3, 4, 2008 – 20 Hours

Part 3

Friday to Sunday June 20, 21, 22, 2008 – 21 Hours

Clinical Skills Workshop

Sunday - Monday July 27-28, 2008 – 20 Hours

Written Examination

A 250 question multiple-choice test will be administered on Saturday afternoon, August 9, 2008 and Sunday morning, August 10, 2008 in Toronto
A passing grade of at least 70% must be obtained in order to pass the certification course. The examination will be administered by NSUCO. A certificate of completion will be issued by NSUCO upon successful completion of the examination and clinical rotation.

Note: This staggered weekend format will be extremely cost effective and lest disruptive to your practice, compared to traditional full-time programs that are offered over a two week period. Also, the Saturday sessions will be recorded so those persons who are not able to attend Saturday sessions for religious reasons will be able to attend the lectures on Monday of the same weekend. Additionally, Part I of the final examination will be repeated on Sunday afternoon.

Clinical Rotation – 20 Hours

Each delegate will attend a 20-hour clinical rotation under the direct supervision of a TPA certified optometrist or an ophthalmologist at his or her clinic in Canada or the U.S. Arrangements are being made with several optometry and ophthalmology clinics in the U.S. along the eastern seaboard. Also, negotiations are underway with several ophthalmology clinics in the greater Toronto to serve as clinical rotation sites. Additionally, delegates (attendees) may request that an opthalmologist or TPA certified optometrist be approved as a "mentor" for this portion of the TPA course.
