Nova SEE St. Simons

July 28 - 30, 2017
Nova SEE Beach: St Simon's Island Georgia
The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort
201 Arnold Road
St. Simons, GA 31522

The lectures and content presented at 2017 NOVA SEE at St Simons has been selected with the practicing Optometrist in mind. Evidence based information on a number of important topics will be discussed. Dr Paul Karpecki will update participants on the latest thinking regarding Ocular Surface Disease. This will include information on the newer treatment modalities such as amniotic membrane contact lenses. Dr Karpecki will bring to this meeting the latest information regarding limbal stem cell disease and the recognition and treatment of Sjogren’s syndrome. Recognizing and bringing comfort to our patient suffering mild, moderate or severe ocular surface disease should be in the forefront or primary eye care.

Dr Aaron Gold will present the latest evidence in detection and treatment of both Choroidal tumors and retinal melanomas. According to the Ocular Melanoma Foundation, “Ocular melanoma (“OM” for short) is a cancer of the eye diagnosed in approximately 2,000-2,500 adults annually in the United States. In both the U.S. and Europe, this equates to about 5 - 7.5 cases per million people per year and, for people over 50 years old, the incidence rate increases to around 21 per million per year.

Similar to melanoma of the skin, OM is a little understood and silent killer. In the majority of cases, ocular melanoma develops slowly from the pigmented cells of the choroid (choroidal melanoma) but it also can develop from the pigmented cells of the iris and ciliary body. You may hear it called uveal melanoma because the uvea is a part of the eye containing two areas in which OM can commonly occur.”

Both Drs Karpecki and Gold are residency trained and currently work in specialized busy OD/MD tertiary care practices.

From the NSU College of Optometry Associate Professors, Dr. Lori Vollmer and Dr. Melanie Crandall will round out the weekend. Dr Vollmer is currently completing a masters in Nutrition Science and will bring practicing Optometrist information they can use and share with their patients. She will also be addressing how the Optometric office should handle trauma to the eye and penetrating wounds.characterized by conjunctival epithelial ingrowth (conjunctivalization), vascularization, and chronic keratitis (i.e., a constellation of signs termed limbal stem cell dysfunction [deficiency], characterized by conjunctival epithelial ingrowth (conjunctivalization), vascularization, and chronic keratitis (i.e., a constellation of signs termed limbal stem cell dysfunction [deficiency], characterized by conjunctival epithelial ingrowth (conjunctivalization), vascularization, and chronic keratitis (i.e., a constellation of signs termed limbal stem cell dysfunction [deficiency], characterized by conjunctival epithelial ingrowth (conjunctivalization), vascularization, and chronic keratitis (i.e., a constellation of signs termed limbal stem cell dysfunction [deficiency], characterized by conjunctival epithelial ingrowth (conjunctivalization), vascularization, and chronic keratitis (i.e., a constellation of signs termed limbal stem cell dysfunction [deficiency],
